The Passo Gavia is the road the 1988 Giro d'Italia crossed in a blizzard, and it has never quite shaken the reputation. It runs from Ponte di Legno up to 2,621 metres on the SS300, a state road in name, single-track and unguarded in places in practice.

This stage covers the 18 kilometres of the southern climb. The pacenotes below come from the road's own geometry, and are exactly what the app calls out as you drive it.

The Gavia sits between the Mortirolo's relentlessness and the Stelvio's rhythm: 145 calls over 18 kilometres, sixteen of them hairpins, averaging just under eight per cent.

What the numbers do not show is the width. This is a road where the co-driver's job is less about speed than about knowing whether the next corner opens or tightens before you can see round it, which is precisely the case the notes are built for.

How to read these notes

A call is a direction and a grade: L or R, then 1 (tightest) to 6 (barely a bend). A + or means the corner sits near the edge of its band. Corners too tight for the ladder are named instead: hairpin, open hairpin, square.

The Notes column carries the modifiers a co-driver would add: tightens, opens, long, don’t cut. Radius is the tightest sustained apex radius the engine measured, and Turn is the total heading change through the corner. Those are the two numbers behind the grade.
